HELP - Ballot Initiative Deadline

Postby Seema on Fri Feb 08, 2008 8:17 pm

I forgot to mention this at the last meeting, but it's pretty urgent. Most of you know I've been gathering signatures for the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act for the past few months. I was just informed that we need 92,000 more signatures and we have less than 2 weeks. The deadline is Feb. 22! PLEASE help out by getting signatures in your classes by making a quick announcement! If you can do this, email me at: yhs_logan@yahoo.com and I will meet you on Tuesday morning to give you the petitions!

Here's what to say to your class:

“This is a CA ballot initiative sponsored by the Humane Society of the U.S. as well as other environmental, health, and animal advocates. This is for pregnant pigs, egg-laying hens, and baby veal calves to have enough room to be able to turn around and extend their limbs. Signing this is not voting for it, it’s just helping to get it on next November’s ballot so that people have the option to vote for it. If it gets passed in CA, it would greatly improve the lives of 20 million farm animals held in factory farms each year. But we need 92,000 more signatures in the next two weeks to get it on the ballot!”

THEY MUST BE A REGISTERED CA VOTER to sign, if they’re not, they can fill out a registration form if they want and you can send it in for them. They must sign in BLUE OR BLACK INK ONLY, and they CANNOT put a P.O. box, it must be the address where they registered to vote.

Each county must have a separate sheet. Most students are registered in Santa Clara County, if they’re not, you can write in their county at the top of another sheet, as long as it’s in CA.

Yay. As a whole our campaign got almost 800,000 signatures! (we only needed 650,000) we exceeded our expectations, so that means we're almost SURE we're gonna make the ballot! Thanks to all those who helped

(and for those who didn't... )
